Like other types of project, school investment projects can go wrong, or have less than ideal outcomes, for a wide variety of reasons. It is often the negative aspects of projects that provide the best lessons for improving future performance. One of the most valuable sources of knowledge for local authorities is other local authorities who have already implemented larger projects (typically of £5m or above).
