This section gives you quick access to over 70 guidance documents covering every aspect of the design of schools, including Building Bulletins, CABE design guides, and more detailed technical guidance. Click here to see an example of a Guidance Document.
Each one is accompanied by a short overview of why the guidance is needed and the scope covered. Notes of caution are provided where guidance, while still useful, is out of date, or was developed for a context that may not be appropriate for Wales. Click here to see an example of a review.
General introductory commentaries are also given for some key aspects of school design, summarising the guidance that is available and giving definitions. Click here for an example commentary.
Depending on your level of knowledge or expertise, you can browse through these documents in various ways. By choosing "All Schools" and then one of the topics displayed beneath, you will be taken to all the guidance relating to that topic. Alternatively, if you are concerned with a particular project, choose "Primary", "Secondary" or "Special" and you will see the guidance that is appropriate for spaces that are particular to that sector.
Using these guidance documents and reviews will ensure that both clients and designers of 21st Century Schools are well-informed about all relevant legislation, requirements, and knowledge of best practice. Use these together with the Examples section and other parts of the 21st Century Schools Standard to ensure your success.
