Rhyl High School, Denbighshire

Rhyl High School is an excellent example of a school that has made real and lasting changes to their outside spaces with practically no budget.

The lack of money to spend on developing the grounds is frequently cited as an obstacle to schools making good use of their outside spaces.

Teachers and students were undeterred by cash shortages and led the clearance and improvement activities themselves.  Once they’d started to make an impact, the donations and volunteer help started to roll in.  This positive attitude rubbed off on the students who were soon involved in clearance, laying paths and planting fruit and vegetables. There are plans to rebuild this “worn-out” school but this hasn’t detracted from the value of improving the grounds- an excellent example of what can be done in adverse circumstances.

Practical outdoor learning is now fully embedded in the life of the school on many levels and the Rhyl High School Ground Force Crew meets after school to grow and sustain those green beginnings.
