Ysgol Bro Sion Cwillt

Ysgol Bro Sion Cwillt

The school opened in January 2010 and has been well received by pupils, parents, staff and governors. It has already met its capacity and has attracted pupils from a wide catchment area. All the spaces in the school are well used demonstrating the flexibility of the design approach and the successful extensive use of natural lighting and ventilation wherever practicable. The ground sourced under floor heating system has proved to be efficient and straightforward to run.

The site, chosen after extensive consultation with client officers and planning officers is in a fairly exposed rural location without access to piped gas services. Although some of the original planting required replacing after an exceptionally harsh first winter, the landscaping of the site is now developing well as care was taken to place earth mounded banks in protective locations to shield the external teaching and play spaces around the building.

Future maintenance surveys will be regularly required to monitor the performance of the external fabric in a challenging environment.

The organisation of the new school resulted from extensive local consultation about the combining of resources from three smaller primary schools which were unsatisfactory in their facilities and uneconomic to maintain.

The success of this new school at Synod Inn has encouraged a development strategy for further new area primary schools in Ceredigion. A number of projects of a similar type are now being developed through design stage and into construction contracts to serve local communities across the county. The building typology used in this school has proved to be adaptable to a range of different sites and modified briefs.

Early involvement through LEA of school staff, parents, governors and pupils to engage in constructive consultation is of great value. Systematic option analysis for matters such as selection of site and alternative heating methods proved very worthwhile.
