Newport High School, Bettws Lane, the first school to be completed under the Council’s secondary school redevelopment programme, opened its doors to pupils on the 9th November 2009.

The landmark new development offers advanced teaching facilities, including 34 general classrooms, eight science labs, eight ICT suites, a fully-equipped design technology wing, six SEN areas and a vocational training learning and resource centre.Newport High School

The new Active Living Centre with its state-of-the-art leisure facilities, including a new 25m swimming pool, four court indoor sports hall, fitness suite, full size artificial turf pitch, multi-use games areas and sports pitches will be open for community use, outside of school hours, for residents from all over the city.

There has been much focus on sustainable development within the design of the building including the orientation of general teaching classrooms east and west to minimise solar gains and providing cross ventilation of all classrooms. In addition, energy efficient technology such as solar hot water systems and combined heat and power plant has been included within the building.Newport High School

Part of the consultation process involved the close involvement with the school’s EcoGroup. This consultation included work shops with the school where recycling, reducing carbon and ecology were high on the agenda.

All the above measures resulted in the building obtaining a BREEAM Excellent rating, the first secondary school in Wales to achieve this accolade.

The project was also awarded the Constructing Excellence Waste Minimisation award which demonstrated the commitment by the client and design team to achieving the Waste Resource Action Plan best practice. During the construction period, over 90% of total waste was diverted from landfill.
